Set inside a modest brick building the corner of Irving Park Road and Wolcott Avenue, Timber Lanes reflects the spirit of old-school Chicago: hardworking, welcoming, and full of character. During the Prohibition era, the space operated as a popular local speakeasy. Remnants of that time still exist—like the underground tunnel hidden next to lane 1.
When the building was converted into a bowling alley in the mid-20th century, it quickly became a neighborhood staple. Unlike flashy modern alleys, Timber Lanes has always stayed true to the game’s roots. We’ve maintained manual scoring, vintage seating, and a sense of community that’s rare to find in the digital age.
In 1985, Bob and Karen Kuhn purchased Timber Lanes and helped turn it into one of the most beloved bowling alleys in the country. Under their care, the alley became home to dozens of leagues - some with members who have bowled together for decades.
Today, Timber Lanes remains Chicago's premier destination for bowling. We host competitive leagues, casual leagues, birthday parties, corporate events, fundraisers and even weddings. What makes Timber special isn't just the wood lanes or retro charm - it's the energy. League nights are electric, people connect and make life-long friends, and non-bowlers become bowlers.
Whether you're here to compete, celebrate, or simply enjoy a beer and a few frames, Timber Lanes delivers a truly one of a kind bowling experience.
